The elder reveals details of the dark ritual that created the curse. Aris and Laras learn that a specific counter-ritual, involving a sacrifice or a sacred object, is their only hope.

The air in the elder’s small, cluttered room hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and unsettling. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the wizened face of the man who held our fate in his gnarled hands. Laras sat beside me, her own hand a comforting weight on my knee, her eyes wide and fixed on the elder’s lips. I could feel the tremor in her fingers, a mirror of the disquiet that had become my constant companion.

“You speak of a curse,” I began, my voice raspy, a stark contrast to the youthful vigor I once possessed. The dull ache in my side, a familiar throb that had become as predictable as the sunrise, seemed to intensify with each word. “A curse tied to… this?” I gestured vaguely towards the small, intricately carved wooden box on the table between us. Inside, nestled on a bed of faded velvet, lay the offending toothpick. It looked so innocuous, so utterly harmless, a cruel deception.

The elder’s eyes, like polished obsidian, met mine. They held a depth that spoke of centuries, of knowledge both profound and terrible. He didn’t answer directly, instead reaching a trembling hand towards a stack of brittle, yellowed scrolls piled precariously on a shelf. He selected one, his movements slow and deliberate, as if handling the remnants of a forgotten civilization.
