Seeking Ancient Wisdom
Desperate, Aris and Laras seek out an elder rumored to possess knowledge of ancient curses and rituals. The elder offers cryptic guidance, hinting at a dangerous path to breaking the curse.
The air in the small, cluttered room hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and unsettling, like dust disturbed after centuries of slumber. It clung to my clothes, to my skin, a tangible presence that mirrored the growing unease in my own body. Laras squeezed my hand, her knuckles white, her eyes wide and fixed on the figure seated across from us.
He was old, impossibly old, his skin a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and, I suspected, by secrets. His eyes, however, were sharp, unnervingly so, like obsidian chips that seemed to pierce through the layers of my fear and pain. He was the elder, the one rumored to know things, to have seen things that the modern world had long forgotten. We had found him after weeks of hushed inquiries, of whispers in shadowed markets and furtive meetings in forgotten corners of the city. His name, whispered with a mixture of reverence and trepidation, was Kakek Surya.
“You seek to undo what has been done,” Kakek Surya’s voice was a dry rustle, like leaves skittering across a barren courtyard. It held no warmth, no sympathy, only a stark acknowledgment of our predicament. He gestured with a gnarled finger, tracing an invisible line in the air between us. “The wood remembers. It has a hunger.”
