Scars of the Past

The curse is gone, but Aris and Laras are forever changed. They carry the psychological and perhaps physical scars of their ordeal, pondering the ancient evil and its lingering mysteries.

The silence in the house was a tangible thing, a heavy blanket that had settled over us after the storm. The air, once thick with the acrid smell of burning herbs and the metallic tang of fear, now held only the faint, lingering scent of Laras’s chamomile tea. The toothpick, that insidious sliver of bamboo, was gone. Burned to ash, scattered to the winds, a symbolic burial for a terror that had threatened to consume us whole. Yet, as I sat on the worn sofa, the afternoon sun slanting through the window, I knew the true burial was far from complete.

Laras sat beside me, her hand finding mine, her fingers cool against my skin. Her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, held a new depth, a shadow of the horrors we had faced. We didn’t speak for a long time. What words could possibly encapsulate the journey we had just endured? The gnawing pain, the insidious growth within me, the spectral whispers that had clawed at my sanity, the sheer terror of feeling my body betray me, turning against itself, becoming a grotesque canvas for an ancient, malevolent force.

“Are you… are you alright, Aris?” Laras finally whispered, her voice raspy, as if she hadn’t used it in days.
