The counter-ritual reaches its peak. With a surge of energy, the curse is broken, but not without a cost. Aris experiences a moment of intense pain as the last remnants of the curse are expelled.

The air in the small, dusty room crackled. It wasn't the static electricity of a dry day, but something far more potent, a palpable tension that vibrated through the very floorboards. The Elder, his face a roadmap of ancient sorrows, chanted in a language I barely understood, his voice a low, guttural rumble that seemed to claw its way from the earth itself. Laras stood beside me, her hand a vice grip on my arm, her knuckles white. Her eyes, usually so full of warmth, were wide with a desperate, primal fear, fixed on the center of the makeshift circle we’d drawn.

In the heart of that circle, the bamboo toothpick lay. It pulsed, a faint, sickly green light emanating from its gnarled surface. It was the source, the nexus of this torment, and tonight, it was our target. The Elder had warned us that this would be the final, most brutal act. The curse, he’d said, would fight back. It would lash out with all the fury of its long slumber.

My own body felt like a battlefield. The splinter-like growths, once confined to the periphery, were now a constant, gnawing ache beneath my skin. They twisted and writhed, a phantom infestation that mirrored the ancient evil we were trying to excise. Every breath felt like drawing in shards of glass. I could feel them, sharp and insistent, a testament to how deeply the curse had burrowed into me.
