The air in the room grew thick, heavy, as if the very walls were exhaling a suffocating breath. It was a familiar sensation now, a prelude to the escalating torment that had become my constant companion. Laras sat beside me, her hand a cool, steady weight on my feverish brow. Her presence, once a beacon of comfort, now felt like a fragile shield against an encroaching, insatiable darkness.
“Aris,” she whispered, her voice tight with a fear I knew mirrored my own, though she fought to conceal it. “Are you… are you feeling it again?”
I nodded, unable to form words. The familiar prickling, a thousand tiny needles dancing beneath my skin, was intensifying. It wasn’t just a prickling anymore; it was a gnawing, a tearing from the inside out. My muscles spasmed involuntarily, and a low groan escaped my lips. This was it, the final, brutal crescendo the Elder had warned us about. The curse was no longer content with insidious whispers and phantom pains. It was demanding a more visceral tribute.
