The air in the small, dusty room was heavy, thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something metallic and ancient, like old blood. Elder Joko, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and secrets, stood before us, his gnarled hands tracing unseen patterns in the dim light. Laras, her face pale but her eyes resolute, stood beside me, her fingers intertwined with mine, a silent anchor in the rising tide of my fear.

“The ritual must be performed with absolute precision,” Joko’s voice was a low rasp, barely disturbing the oppressive stillness. “The curse, it is not a simple hex. It is a hunger, born of betrayal and forgotten promises. It seeks to consume you, Aris, to make you one with its woody roots.”

I shivered, not from the chill that seemed to emanate from the very stones of the room, but from the visceral understanding of his words. The gnawing pain in my gut, the phantom sensation of splintering wood beneath my skin – they were no longer just symptoms. They were the curse manifesting, its tendrils weaving themselves into my very being.
