The air in the elder’s small hut was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else, something ancient and earthy that clung to the rough-hewn wood. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the elder’s face, a roadmap of wrinkles etched by years and, I suspected, by secrets. Laras sat beside me, her hand a warm, steady weight on my knee, a silent anchor in the storm that had become my life.

“You seek to undo what cannot be easily undone,” the elder’s voice rasped, like dry leaves skittering across stone. He hadn’t looked at me directly since we’d arrived, his gaze fixed on the intricately carved wooden bowl resting on his lap. “The roots of this affliction run deeper than you can imagine, young Aris.”

“We understand,” Laras said, her voice firm, cutting through the hesitant fear that had coiled in my gut. “We know it’s dangerous. But we have no choice. Look at him.” She gestured to me, and I felt a familiar, agonizing twinge beneath my ribs, a phantom pressure like a root pushing through soil. I’d learned to hide it, to mask the wince, but Laras saw everything.
