The scent of old paper and dust was a familiar comfort, a perfume of forgotten stories that usually soothed my frayed nerves. But tonight, it felt heavy, suffocating. Laras was deep in the labyrinth of her research, surrounded by a fortress of books and brittle documents, her brow furrowed in concentration. I watched her from the doorway, my own body a landscape of alien discomfort. The dull ache in my side had intensified, a persistent throb that seemed to echo the frantic beat of my heart. I tried to dismiss it, another phantom sensation in this growing collection of horrors, but the memory of that first, sharp sting, followed by the unsettling sensation of something foreign beneath my skin, kept it at bay.
"Anything, Laras?" I managed, my voice rougher than I intended.
She didn't look up immediately. Her fingers, stained with ink, traced a line of faded script in a thick, leather-bound tome. The lamp on her desk cast long, dancing shadows that made the room feel both cavernous and claustrophobic. Finally, she sighed, a soft exhalation that seemed to carry the weight of centuries.
