The air, once thick with the scent of brewing coffee and the faint musk of expensive cologne, now carried a different perfume. Acrid. Sharp. It clawed at the back of my throat, a phantom tickle that refused to be soothed by the shallow breaths I took. The once comforting hum of the city, a lullaby I’d always found grounding, had morphed into a discordant symphony of shrieks and groans, a sound that vibrated not just in my ears, but deep within my bones. A hollow echo of the terror that had taken root, blooming in the fertile soil of my deepest anxieties.

My gaze, a desperate sentinel, swept across the room. Dust motes, usually dancing in lazy shafts of sunlight, now swirled in a frantic, chaotic ballet, illuminated by an infernal glow that seeped through the cracks, painting the familiar office in hues of orange and bruised purple. Now, it was a gaping maw, a monstrous eye staring back at me, reflecting a distorted reality. Flames, like hungry tendrils, snaked their way up the building’s steel skeleton, their heat a palpable force even through the thick, reinforced glass. The sky, a canvas I’d once admired for its boundless blue, was now a churning inferno, a testament to the chaos that had descended from its depths.
