The air in the room, already thick with the scent of fear and something metallic, seemed to grow even heavier as David Sterling stepped forward. He smirked, a predatory glint in his eyes that made Eleanor’s stomach clench. He was a peacock preening before a firing squad, utterly convinced of his own invincibility.

“Alright, alright,” David drawled, his voice dripping with mock impatience. He gestured with a flourish, as if addressing a crowd rather than four terrified strangers. “Let’s get this over with. Frankly, I’m insulted. You think I have some dark, sordid secret that warrants… this?” He swept his gaze around the sterile, windowless space, a theatrical shudder rippling through him. “My life is practically an open book. A bestseller, even.”

The disembodied voice remained silent, a patient predator waiting for its prey to falter. The silence stretched, taut and unforgiving. David’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of something akin to annoyance crossing his features, before he smoothed it over.
