The disembodied voice had made that abundantly clear. This wasn't about escape. It was about confession.

He saw the wide, terrified eyes of the young woman, the crumpled metal of the car, the horrified faces of onlookers. He hadn't been driving. He’d been a passenger, egging the driver on, a stupid, reckless dare that had spiraled into a nightmare. The driver had fled, leaving Marcus to face the sirens, the questions, the crushing weight of guilt. He’d never spoken of it, not truly. How could he? The guilt had been a silent, constant companion, a shadow that clung to him, whispering accusations in the lonely hours of the night.
