Chapter 11
Unraveling the Past
Eleanor and Marcus work together, piecing together the discovered clues and inconsistencies in David's story. They suspect the game is designed to expose a specific past event involving all of them.
The sterile air of the room seemed to press in on Eleanor, thick with the lingering scent of fear and something metallic, something she was trying desperately to ignore. She watched Marcus, his jaw set, his gaze fixed on the wall where the disembodied voice had last spoken. He was trying to be the rock, the protector, but she could see the tremor in his hands, the way his knuckles were white as he clenched them. They were the only two who had shown any semblance of rational thought, any drive beyond blind panic. David, predictably, was a coiled spring of self-preservation, his eyes darting between them, searching for weakness, for an opportunity. Sarah, bless her heart, was a trembling bird, her wide eyes reflecting the terror that had become their constant companion.
"He's lying," Marcus said, his voice low and rough. He was referring to David, of course. David’s confession, or rather, his carefully curated half-truth, had been a masterpiece of manipulation. He'd admitted to financial troubles, to owing dangerous people money, but the tremor in his voice, the way his eyes had flickered when he spoke of lost investments, had felt rehearsed. Eleanor had seen that kind of performance before, the desperate act of a cornered animal.
"He's always lying," Eleanor replied, her voice a quiet counterpoint to Marcus's raw emotion. She ran a hand over the smooth, cold surface of the table, her mind already sifting through the fragments of information they’d gathered. The cryptic symbols etched into the floor, the strange hum that seemed to emanate from the walls, David’s suspiciously convenient narrative – it all felt like pieces of a puzzle, a puzzle designed to break them. "But what is he hiding specifically? The voice said 'deepest secret.' David's debt is a problem, yes, but it doesn't feel like the kind of secret that would warrant… this."
