The air in the ancient chamber felt thick, heavy with the dust of ages and the unspoken weight of destiny. Moonlight, fractured by the stained-glass windows depicting forgotten battles, painted abstract patterns on the worn stone floor. Aethelred traced the outline of a fallen knight on one of the panes, his breath misting the glass. Beside him, Homer stood sentinel, his gaze fixed on some unseen point beyond the chamber walls, his usual stoicism etched with a tension Aethelred hadn't witnessed before.

“Homer,” Aethelred began, his voice barely a whisper, “you’ve been… different since the encounter in the Whispering Woods. More distant, even.”

Homer’s jaw tightened, a barely perceptible tremor running through his broad shoulders. He turned, his eyes, usually pools of calm wisdom, now held a flicker of something raw, something Aethelred couldn’t quite decipher. “The woods hold more than just shadows, Aethelred. They hold memories. And sometimes, memories carry a price.”
