"Are you certain of this, Homer?" Aethelred's voice was a low rasp, barely audible above the storm’s fury. He didn’t turn, his gaze fixed on the faded tapestry depicting a glorious battle, a scene so distant, so utterly alien to the present reality. Figures in shining armor, their faces etched with valor, stood defiant against a swirling darkness. They were the names. The legends. The ones he was meant to honor. The ones he felt he could never, ever be.
Homer, a silhouette against the flickering torchlight, remained impassive. His face, a roadmap of countless battles and untold wisdom, was unreadable. "Certainty is a luxury, Aethelred. His voice, deep and resonant, held a gravitas that normally anchored Aethelred, but tonight, it felt like another stone on the crushing edifice of expectation.
