The air, once crisp with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried a cloying sweetness, like rot disguised by perfume. It clung to Aethelred’s tongue, a constant, unsettling reminder that the world was not as it should be. The forest, a familiar friend in his youth, had turned traitorous. Trees, their bark twisted into grotesque visages, seemed to watch him with hollow eyes. The very ground beneath his worn boots felt spongy, yielding, as if it too were succumbing to some unseen sickness.

“Stay alert, Aethelred,” Homer’s voice, a low rumble like distant thunder, cut through the oppressive silence. He moved with a predator’s grace, his hand never far from the hilt of his ancient blade. “The Shadow’s influence grows bolder.”

Aethelred gripped the smooth, cool wood of his own sword, the weight of it a familiar comfort, yet today it felt inadequate. He was brave, he knew that. He’d faced down bullies in the village, stood firm when the older boys had tried to steal his meager coin. But this… this was different. This was a primal fear, a cold dread that seeped into his bones, whispering doubts he’d tried so hard to silence. *What if you’re not enough? What if you fail?*
