The air grew heavy, not with the scent of pine and damp earth they had grown accustomed to, but with a dry, papery decay. Aethelred felt it settle in his lungs, a subtle oppression that mirrored the gnawing doubt in his gut. Each step deeper into the ancient wood brought them closer to Lyra of the Fading Stars, a name whispered by Homer with a reverence that pricked Aethelred’s unease. He was the new hero, tasked with upholding the honor of those who had come before, yet the weight of their names pressed down on him, an invisible mantle he wasn't sure he could bear.
"We are close," Homer’s voice was a low rumble, cutting through the unnerving silence. His gaze, usually sharp and focused, seemed distant, lost in the echoes of a forgotten age. "The Archives do not welcome the uninvited, Aethelred. Be mindful of your intent."
Aethelred nodded, though his mind was a jumble of Homer's cryptic counsel and the chilling whispers he’d heard in the shadowed glades. The Whispering Shadow. It was a presence, a void that seemed to leech the very light from the world, and Aethelred felt its cold touch even here, in the supposed sanctuary of Lyra’s domain.
