The weight of the world, once a crushing burden, now settled onto Aethelred’s shoulders with a strange, newfound familiarity. It was no longer the crushing dread of an unknown enemy, but the steady pressure of a mantle he was finally beginning to understand. The truth, stark and brutal, had been laid bare in the echoing halls of Lyra’s Fading Stars archive. The heroes before him hadn't simply vanished; they had been consumed, their light snuffed out by the insatiable hunger of the Whispering Shadow, a darkness that fed on despair and the forgetting of glory. And Homer, his stoic mentor, had been there, a silent witness to their demise, a man burdened by a sacrifice Aethelred was only beginning to grasp.

"They didn't fail, Aethelred," Homer’s voice, rough as ancient stone, cut through the lingering silence of the archive. He stood beside Aethelred, his gaze fixed on the swirling patterns of starlight that Lyra had conjured, a spectral tapestry of forgotten constellations. "They fought. They burned so brightly that the Shadow itself recoiled, for a time. Their names are not erased; they are etched into the very fabric of what remains."

Aethelred clenched his fists, the rough wool of his tunic a grounding sensation against his skin. He remembered the fear that had gripped him in the previous chamber, the cold tendrils of the Shadow’s influence trying to pry open his deepest insecurities. He had seen visions of himself, broken and defeated, his own name a mere whisper in the wind, forgotten before it could even be truly remembered. But Lyra’s words, and Homer’s quiet strength, had pushed back the encroaching despair.
