The air in Lyra’s sanctuary, usually thick with the scent of ancient parchment and starlight, now felt heavy, charged with an unspoken dread. Lyra herself seemed to shimmer, her form less defined than usual, like a star on the verge of winking out. Aethelred watched her, his gut tightening. He had seen her light dim before, but never like this. Homer stood beside him, his usual stoicism etched with a weariness that went beyond mere physical exhaustion. It was the weariness of holding a secret so profound it threatened to crack his very soul.

“You asked for the truth, Aethelred,” Homer’s voice was a low rumble, a stark contrast to the usual clarity. “The truth of what happened to those who bore the names before you. The truth of why the world trembles on the brink.” He gestured towards Lyra, her eyes closed, her breath shallow. “Lyra has guarded the remnants of their memories, the echoes of their final moments. But the Shadow’s blight grows stronger, and even these echoes are fading. The time for half-truths is long past.”

Aethelred’s heart pounded against his ribs. He had braced himself for grim tidings, for tales of battles lost or heroes fallen in glorious combat. But the somber atmosphere, Lyra’s fading presence, hinted at something far more devastating. “What happened to them, Homer? Did they… did they fail?” The question felt like a betrayal even as it left his lips.
