The dawn broke over Riverside, not with the gentle nudge of light, but with an almost violent assertion, as if the sun itself was impatient to witness the impossible. Sonia stirred, a slow unfurling from the depths of a sleep so profound it felt like a surrender. Her limbs, heavy and aching just hours before, felt… light. The searing, relentless fire that had consumed her skin, that had made even the softest cotton a torment, was gone. Replaced by a cool, almost startling calm. She drew a breath, deep and unimpeded, and for the first time in weeks, it didn’t hitch in her chest with a gasp of pain.

Her eyes fluttered open. The familiar, slightly faded floral wallpaper of her bedroom swam into focus. The morning light, usually a harsh intruder, was now a soft caress. She tentatively reached a hand to her side, where the shingles had raged with such ferocity. Her fingers brushed against smooth, unbroken skin. She traced the phantom lines of the blisters, the angry red welts, and found only a faint, almost imperceptible warmth.

A disbelieving laugh, shaky and wet with unshed tears, escaped her lips. She swung her legs out of bed, her feet landing on the cool wood floor with a solid thud. She stood, testing her weight, her balance. It was as if the illness had been a cruel dream, a fevered hallucination. But the memories were too vivid, too raw – the sleepless nights, the desperate pleas for relief, the gnawing fear that this was a slow, agonizing march towards something final.
