Final year. It was supposed to be about finishing strong, about the heady anticipation of graduation, about the quiet thrill of finally being in control of my own future. Instead, it was becoming a relentless march through my mother’s vision of success.

"Sophie, darling," she began, her voice honeyed but with an edge that promised a lecture, "I've scheduled you for several important engagements this month. You can't afford to neglect these opportunities." She placed a crisp, cream-colored card on my cluttered desk, the embossed lettering glinting under the desk lamp. A gala. A charity auction. A luncheon with the esteemed Minister of Culture. My heart sank. These weren't opportunities; they were gilded cages.
