The air in my tiny dorm room felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the ghosts of laughter that had once filled it. It had been a week since the gala, a week since the illusion of a simple, happy final year had shattered into a million sharp, glittering pieces. The carefully constructed world I’d inhabited, one of textbooks and late-night study sessions, had been ripped open, revealing a tangled mess of ambition, possessiveness, and a rivalry so fierce it had blindsided me completely.

I traced the rim of my lukewarm tea mug, the ceramic cool against my fingertips. Justin. Josh. The names echoed in the hollow space where my heart used to beat with uncomplicated excitement. I replayed every shared glance, every casual touch, every whispered compliment, searching for the clues I’d so conveniently missed. Was it all a game? Had I been a pawn in their elaborate, high-stakes competition? The thought was a cold dread that seeped into my bones, making it hard to breathe.

My phone buzzed on the desk, startling me. It was my mother. I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen. Lately, her calls felt less like a mother’s concern and more like a general’s briefing, filled with expectations that felt like mountains I was too small to climb. “Sophie, darling, have you confirmed your attendance for the Sterling dinner next Tuesday? Mrs. Albright will be there, and you know how important it is to make a good impression.” Her voice, usually so warm, now carried a sharp edge of impatience.
