Chapter 5
A Knight's Bold Move
Emboldened by his overheard conversation, Kaelen seeks a secret meeting with Aurelia. He confesses his love and proposes they escape their predetermined fates together.
The weight of his heart had always been a familiar burden to Sir Kaelen, a constant, quiet ache that he had learned to live with, much like the ache in his sword arm after a long day’s training. For years, he had watched Princess Aurelia from the periphery, a loyal knight sworn to her protection, his gaze lingering a moment too long, his hand instinctively reaching out to steady her when she stumbled, only to pull back, remembering his place. He was a knight, a man of steel and duty, and she was a princess, a jewel destined for a crown, or in this new, crushing reality, for the coffers of Duke Valerius.
But the whispered words, overheard in the hushed intimacy of a dressing room, had ignited a fire within him, a daring ember that threatened to consume the carefully constructed walls of his restraint. He waited for the moon to climb high, painting the castle courtyards in shades of silver and deepest indigo. He waited for the castle to fall into a slumber, the only sounds the distant hoot of an owl and the soft sigh of the wind through the battlements. Then, clad in a dark tunic that blended with the shadows, Kaelen moved. His boots made no sound on the flagstones as he navigated the familiar maze of corridors, his destination the small, secluded garden at the western wing, a place Aurelia often sought solace.
