Chapter 8
The Memory Thief's Gambit
The killer reveals his twisted motive, tied to the artifact's power and Liora's birth mother. He attempts to manipulate Liora's remaining memories, playing a dangerous game.
The air in the hidden chamber crackled with a tension that had nothing to do with the arcane energies of the memory artifact humming on its pedestal. It thrummed with a more visceral, human dread. Liora stood before him, her adoptive parents a silent, grim tableau behind her, their faces etched with a resignation that felt heavier than any accusation. The Killer, a figure she now knew by a name that tasted like ash on her tongue, stood bathed in the artifact's eerie glow, his eyes, once a cold, unreadable grey, now burning with a feverish intensity.
"You see it now, don't you, child?" His voice was a silken rasp, devoid of the warmth he had once feigned when he’d first entered their lives, a ‘distant relative’ offering condolences. “The truth. So much more potent than any manufactured peace.”
Liora’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. The locket, clutched in her palm, felt like a tiny anchor in the swirling storm of her emotions. The faded image within, her mother’s gentle smile, was a stark contrast to the predatory gleam in the man’s eyes. "You killed her," she stated, the words a raw, ragged breath. "You took her from me."
