Confronted, Liora's adoptive parents confess their complicity in the trade and cover-up. They reveal the killer's identity and his obsession with a powerful memory artifact.
The air in the study was thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of aged paper. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the heavy velvet curtains, illuminating the stern, unyielding faces of Liora’s adoptive parents. They sat across from her, the ornate mahogany desk between them a stark, imposing barrier. Liora’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. The locket, cool and heavy in her palm, felt like a burning ember. She’d found it tucked away in the hidden compartment of her mother’s old jewelry box, a place she’d never thought to look before. Now, the faded photograph within, the ghost of a woman with eyes so like her own, stared back, an accusation and a plea all at once.
“You know,” Liora began, her voice a tremor in the oppressive silence. “You know who she is.”
Her adoptive mother’s smile, usually so practiced and saccharine, faltered. A flicker of something raw and desperate crossed her face before it was smoothed away, replaced by a mask of weary patience. “Liora, darling, we’ve been over this. That locket… it belonged to a distant relative. Someone we barely knew.”
