The air crackled, not with the polite hum of a party, but with a raw, untamed energy. It was the memory artifact, pulsing at the center of the room like a captured star, its light no longer a gentle beacon but a furious tempest. Liora stood before it, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, the stolen memories of countless lives swirling around her like a Maelstrom. She could feel them, a cacophony of laughter and tears, of triumphs and devastating losses, all clamoring for attention, for release.

Her adoptive mother, her face a mask of desperate fury, lunged forward, her hand outstretched, not in a plea, but in a grab. “Liora, you don’t understand! This power is too much for you!” Her voice, usually so smooth and commanding, was now strained, brittle.

But Liora saw through the facade. She saw the fear, the desperate attempt to cling to control, the same control that had kept her in a gilded cage for so long. “No,” Liora’s voice was a whisper, yet it cut through the din. “It’s *my* memories you’ve been stealing, Mother. *My* life you’ve been trading.”
