Chapter 14
The Killer's Lair
Following a trail of stolen memories, Liora and Tina infiltrate the killer's hidden sanctuary, a place filled with the echoes of stolen lives.
The air in the alley was thick with the scent of stale rain and something else, something metallic and sharp that Liora couldn’t quite place. It clung to her like a second skin, a constant reminder of the labyrinthine path they were treading. Tina, ever the pragmatist, kept a tight grip on Liora’s arm, her knuckles white against Liora’s sleeve. “Are you sure about this, Liora? It feels… wrong.”
Liora nodded, her gaze fixed on the grimy, unmarked door ahead. It was the end of a trail, a breadcrumb of stolen memories leading them not to a place of comfort, but to the very source of her torment. “The memory fragment showed a room like this. Dark. Hidden. And the echo… the echo was so strong, Tina. Like a scream trapped in glass.”
The stolen memories they’d managed to piece together were a fractured mosaic, shards of lives cruelly ripped from their owners. Each fragment brought a flicker of understanding, a ghostly whisper of the killer’s presence. They had followed the faint trails, the psychic residue left behind by the purloined moments, leading them from the opulent halls of memory brokers to the forgotten corners of the city. This alley, this unassuming door, was the culmination of weeks of desperate searching, of sleepless nights and gnawing fear.
