Chapter 6

Consumed by Shadow

Weeks have passed, or perhaps mere days; time has lost all meaning for Harry. His once-sharp cynicism has eroded, replaced by a hollow-eyed terror. The relentless psychological and physical assaults have broken him. He no longer fights back, merely endures the torment, his spirit dwindling with each passing hour. The entity, fed by his fear and despair, has grown stronger. Harry sits in his darkened apartment, the amulet a constant, oppressive presence. He understands now, with chilling clarity, that his greed has led him to this irreversible fate. He is no longer Harry Mitchell, pawn shop clerk, but a vessel for the darkness, forever bound to the cursed artifact and the malevolent entity it unleashed upon him.

The ticking of the clock had long since ceased to be a measure of time, becoming instead a metronome for his descent. Weeks? Days? It was a question that echoed in the cavernous emptiness of his mind, a void where memory and reason used to reside. Harry Mitchell, the man who once delighted in the shrewd negotiation, the satisfied smirk of a deal well struck, was gone. In his place was a hollowed-out shell, his eyes like chips of glass reflecting nothing but the encroaching darkness.

He’d learned to flinch, to brace himself, not in anticipation of pain, but in a futile attempt to lessen its impact. The unseen entity, a predator that feasted on his fear, grew fat and strong on his dwindling spirit.

He sat hunched in his armchair, the worn fabric a familiar, yet alien, comfort. The only light came from the sliver of moon that dared to pierce the perpetual gloom that had settled over the city, and, more importantly, over his life. And there, on the small, scarred coffee table, lay the source of his undoing. The gold amulet, once a thing of breathtaking beauty, now pulsed with a malevolent aura, its intricate carvings seeming to writhe in the dim light. It was a siren’s lure, a gilded promise that had led him to the rocks. He no longer felt the urge to touch it, to hold it, to contemplate its worth. Its presence was a physical weight, a suffocating blanket that pressed down on his chest, stealing his breath.
