Chapter 4
The Unyielding Door
Driven by sheer terror, Harry decides he must be rid of the amulet. He tries to bury it in the park, but it reappears on his nightstand the next morning, glinting innocently. He throws it into the river, only to find it back in his apartment, nestled amongst his belongings. His increasingly frantic attempts to discard the cursed object are met with the amulet’s persistent return. Simultaneously, his home becomes a literal prison. Doors refuse to open, windows remain sealed shut no matter how hard he pushes. The house itself seems to conspire against him, its exits sealed by an unseen force, ensuring he cannot escape the amulet’s influence or the entity it contains.
The first rays of dawn, usually a welcome sight, now felt like a mocking spotlight, illuminating the suffocating dread that had settled over Harry’s apartment. Sleep had been a phantom, a fleeting illusion chased away by the guttural whispers that slithered from the shadows and the phantom sensations of cold breath against his skin. The amulet, that damnable, beautiful thing, lay on his nightstand, catching the nascent light with an almost insolent gleam. It was the source, he knew with a certainty that chilled him to the bone. It had to be.
Panic, raw and primal, clawed at his throat. He couldn’t stay here. Not another moment. Not with the unseen hands that brushed against him in the dark, not with the chilling laughter that seemed to echo from the very walls. He snatched the amulet from the nightstand, its smooth, cool surface a stark contrast to the sweat beading on his palms. He had to get rid of it. Truly get rid of it.
The park. That was it. A place of open space, of earth that could swallow secrets whole. He fumbled with his keys, his hands trembling so violently he almost dropped them. The apartment door, usually a simple barrier, felt heavy, resistant, as if it too harbored a malicious intent. But it yielded, and he practically stumbled out into the pre-dawn chill, the amulet clutched tight in his fist.
