Chapter 5
Ms. Long's Gentle Hand
In the quiet space of a classroom or therapy room, Ms. Long offers a safe harbor. Her patient, empathetic approach begins to build a bridge of trust with the silent child.
The world had shrunk for Lily. It was no longer the sprawling expanse of her backyard, the dizzying heights of the monkey bars, or the endless possibilities of a crayon box. Her world had contracted to the size of her own small room, the hushed corners of her house, and the tight knot of fear that lived perpetually in her chest. The vibrant colors of her imagination had faded to muted grays and blues, mirroring the quiet sorrow that had settled over her like a shroud.

Meal times were a quiet affair, the clinking of silverware the loudest sound. Sharon would try to engage her, asking about her day, about her friends, about anything at all. Brandie's responses were monosyllabic, a shake of her head, a mumbled “okay,” or a simple, empty stare.

He’d brought home a new set of sparkly stickers, the kind that used to send her into raptures. Brandie had merely glanced at them, her face impassive, before turning away. He’d suggested a trip to the park, to the swings she used to fly on with such abandon. She’d refused, her small hand clutching at Sharon’s skirt, her eyes wide with a fear that spoke volumes without a single sound.
