Sharon watched her daughter, Brandie, and a knot tightened in her stomach. It had been weeks, maybe even a month now, since the light had truly gone out of Brandie’s eyes. The bright, curious spark that usually danced within them had been replaced by a dull, vacant stare. Five years old, a tender age for such a profound shift, and Sharon felt utterly adrift in a sea of unanswered questions. Hollister, usually a town that hummed with the comforting rhythm of familiar routines, now felt heavy, shrouded in a silence that was more deafening than any noise.

Brandie, once a whirlwind of giggles and questions, had become a ghost in her own home. She moved through the rooms with a quietness that was unnerving, her small feet padding softly, as if afraid to disturb the air.
