My record label held auditions, attracting 300,000 applicants. I aimed to work with specific, talented individuals. If I felt comfortable and they were ready, they might get a contract and become a star.
The air in the studio buzzed, not with the usual sterile hum of electronics, but with a tangible current of anticipation. Three hundred thousand. Three hundred thousand hopefuls had sent in their videos, their demos, their shaky phone recordings of dreams set to a beat. It was a tidal wave of talent, a digital deluge of aspiration, and I, Omar Diamondz, was standing at the dam, deciding who, if anyone, would get a trickle of access to the glittering metropolis of the entertainment industry. My own record label, Omar Diamondz Music Productions, was officially off the ground, a testament to a journey that had begun with clippers and contraband tobacco and now culminated in this digital cacophony.
“So, what’s the vibe, boss?” Rico, my right-hand man, leaned against a soundboard, his eyes scanning the rapidly scrolling list of incoming submissions on a massive monitor. Rico was a whiz with the tech, a former street hustler who’d found his true calling in the organized chaos of music production. He understood the hustle, the grind, and most importantly, he understood the art of making something out of nothing.
I stretched, feeling the familiar ache in my shoulders from hours hunched over paperwork, contracts, and business plans. “The vibe, Rico, is discernment. We’re not just signing anyone. This isn’t about filling quotas or chasing trending sounds. This is about finding the next legend, the one who’s got that spark, that raw, undeniable something.” I gestured towards the screen. “Three hundred thousand is a lot of noise. We need to find the signal.”
