A Day Etched in Time

The air hummed with a quiet anticipation, a feeling that had settled deep within Tobie’s chest since Jamie had first walked into his orbit. Today felt different, though, like the world had paused its frantic spinning just for them. It was a Saturday, one of those rare, sun-drenched Saturdays in early autumn that promised endless possibilities. Tobie had spent the morning meticulously planning, not with the meticulousness of a student preparing for an exam, but with the tender care of someone arranging flowers for a beloved. He’d packed a worn picnic basket with sandwiches, a thermos of Jamie’s favourite hot chocolate, and a small, foil-wrapped surprise he’d spent hours perfecting.

He found Jamie waiting for him by the old oak tree at the edge of Willow Creek Park, just as they’d agreed. The sunlight dappled through the leaves, casting shifting patterns on Jamie’s face, making his already bright eyes seem to hold a thousand tiny stars. He was wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans, but to Tobie, he looked like he’d stepped out of a dream. A shy, hopeful smile bloomed on Jamie’s lips as Tobie approached, and Tobie felt a familiar warmth spread through him, chasing away any lingering anxieties.

“Hey,” Tobie said, his voice a little softer than usual. He held up the picnic basket. “Ready for our adventure?”
