The air in the quiet corner of the library felt thicker than usual, charged with unspoken words and the faint scent of aging paper. Tobie traced the worn cover of a book, his fingers cold despite the warmth of the afternoon sun filtering through the tall windows. He’d asked Jamie to meet him here, a place that had become their sanctuary, a silent witness to the hesitant unfolding of their connection. But today, the usual comfort of these familiar shelves felt distant, overshadowed by the gnawing unease that had settled in Tobie’s chest.

He’d spent the last few days replaying Leo’s casual remark, a seemingly innocuous comment about relationships and the “right time” for things. It had landed like a stone, stirring up all of Tobie’s deepest insecurities. Was he being foolish? Was this age difference, the two years that felt like a chasm in the eyes of the world, a barrier too significant to overcome? He saw the way people sometimes looked, the subtle glances that spoke volumes of unspoken judgment, and a cold dread would creep in.
