Confrontation Chaos: Who Gets the Girl?

The air in my tiny apartment, which I'd been subsisting in on a diet of instant ramen and existential dread, was thick with the scent of desperation and, possibly, the lingering aroma of Dante’s questionable cologne. I’d invited him over, a decision that felt about as wise as juggling chainsaws while blindfolded. But Derek, bless his deceitful, financially threatening heart, was out playing house with Rose, so the coast was theoretically clear. Theoretically.

Dante, ever the picture of understated menace, lounged on my rickety sofa like he owned the place. Which, in a way, he kind of did, considering he’d shown up unannounced and proceeded to critique my interior decorating choices. "Needs more skulls," he'd declared, his voice a low rumble that did strange things to my insides.

"I'm going for 'cozy minimalist,' not 'serial killer's lair'," I'd retorted, trying to inject some humor into the situation. It was a defense mechanism, really. If I could laugh, maybe I wouldn't feel like I was about to spontaneously combust from the sheer absurdity of it all.
