Chapter 3
Jamma's Jive and Earth's Fate
Disoriented but surprisingly unharmed, Ericka and Bebe find themselves in a surprisingly stylish, albeit alien, chamber. Before they can even process their surroundings, a being with shimmering, iridescent skin and eyes like a thousand tiny stars floats towards them. 'Yo, E-Pop! Beebz! What's crackin'?' the being chirps, its voice a synthesized melody. It introduces itself as Jamma. After a moment of stunned silence, Ericka manages a weak, 'Uh, what's crackin' with you, dude?' Jamma, unfazed, launches into their mission: eight planets in the Proxima Centauri system are throwing the galaxy's biggest parties, and E-Pop and Beebz have been chosen to DJ. The catch? If they don't totally kill it, Earth gets vaporized. Bebe grips Ericka's arm, her laid-back demeanor replaced by a flicker of fear. 'You're saying our beats are, like, the only thing between us and cosmic oblivion?'
The light was blinding, a disorienting swirl of colors that felt like being spun in a cosmic washing machine. Ericka squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for impact, for the jarring crash that always followed a particularly wild ride. But instead of a collision, there was a gentle settling, a soft hiss, and then… silence. A profound, almost ringing silence that was more unnerving than any explosion.
Slowly, cautiously, Ericka opened her eyes. She blinked, then blinked again, trying to make sense of the space they’d landed in. It wasn't the sterile, metallic interior she’d half-expected from a UFO abduction scenario. No, this place was… chic. The walls shimmered with a pearlescent sheen, shifting through shades of lavender and rose gold. Soft, bioluminescent orbs pulsed gently overhead, casting an ethereal glow. Plush, velvety seating, shaped like oversized, iridescent seashells, was arranged in a semicircle around a central, crystalline platform. It looked less like a spaceship and more like the VIP lounge of the most exclusive club on any planet.
Beside her, Bebe let out a low groan. "Okay, E. If this is your idea of a prank, it's a little extra, even for you."
Ericka chuckled, the sound a little shaky. "Trust me, Beebz, if I could orchestrate this, there would be way more glitter. And probably a snack bar." She pushed herself up, her joints protesting slightly. "Seriously though, where are we?"
As if summoned by her question, a figure emerged from the shimmering wall. It floated, rather than walked, gliding towards them with an unnerving grace. The being was tall and slender, its skin a mesmerizing tapestry of iridescent scales that shifted through every color imaginable with every subtle movement. Its head was smooth, devoid of hair, and its eyes… its eyes were like tiny, swirling galaxies, each one a universe in itself.
"Yo, E-Pop! Beebz! What's crackin'?" the being chirped, its voice a melodic blend of synthesized tones, like a beatboxer who’d swallowed a choir.
Ericka stared, mouth agape. Bebe, usually the picture of chill, was rigid beside her, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and apprehension.
"Uh," Ericka stammered, her mind struggling to catch up. "Uh, what's crackin' with you, dude?" The words felt absurd, tumbling out of her mouth in the face of this otherworldly apparition.
The being’s galactic eyes seemed to twinkle. "Righteous! You guys are totally on point with the lingo. It’s me, Jamma. Your friendly neighborhood cosmic concierge." Jamma gestured with a long, elegant appendage that ended in delicate, translucent fingers. "Welcome aboard the Starhopper 7. Pretty dope, right? I've been studying Earth's freshest slang, and let me tell you, you two are the GOATs of the global music scene. Your sets? Legendary. Totally fire."
Bebe finally found her voice, a soft, disbelieving whisper. "You… you know us?"
"Know you? Fam, I've been streaming your mixes for, like, eons," Jamma said, performing a graceful pirouette that sent ripples of light across its skin. "Your vibe? Out of this world. Literally, in your case, now."
Ericka’s mind was racing. This was beyond anything she’d ever imagined. Aliens. Slang-spouting aliens. "Okay, Jamma, so, like, why are we here? Did we accidentally bump into your spaceship while we were, you know, doing our thing?"
Jamma’s iridescent skin flickered with a more serious hue, a deep sapphire. "Nah, fam. This ain't no fender bender. This is a mission. A big one." Jamma floated closer, its galactic eyes fixing on them. "See, the Proxima Centauri System? It's lit. Like, galaxy-level lit. And eight of their planets are throwing the most epic parties you can imagine. We're talking nebulae backdrops, black hole dance floors, the whole nine yards."
Ericka felt a thrill of excitement, quickly followed by a prickle of unease. "Okay… so they want us to DJ?"
"You nailed it, E-Pop!" Jamma exclaimed, clapping its translucent hands together. The sound was like wind chimes. "You two are the chosen ones. The absolute best. They need your beats to make these parties happen. Your energy, your flow, your ability to make an entire planet move as one. It's what they're craving."
Bebe’s brow furrowed. "Chosen ones? For DJing? That's… wild. But, like, we do that. That's our jam."
"Exactly!" Jamma bounced slightly in the air. "But here's the kicker, the plot twist, the mic drop moment." Jamma’s voice dropped, becoming more serious. "If you guys don't absolutely kill it, if these parties aren't the most unforgettable events in the history of the cosmos… then Earth gets the boot."
The air in the chamber seemed to thicken, the bioluminescent orbs dimming slightly. Ericka’s stomach plummeted. "The boot? What do you mean, the boot?"
"Vaporized," Jamma stated, the word delivered with a chilling flatness that belied its earlier slang-laden enthusiasm. "Poof. Gone. Like a bad track nobody downloads."
Bebe’s hand shot out, gripping Ericka’s arm so tightly Ericka winced. "You're saying… you're saying our beats are, like, the only thing between us and cosmic oblivion?" The laid-back demeanor that was Bebe’s signature was shattered, replaced by a raw, visible fear.
Ericka’s own heart hammered against her ribs. Vaporized? Earth? Her family, her friends, the city she loved, the entire planet… all of it resting on their ability to spin some sick tunes for aliens? It was too much. The weight of it pressed down on her, crushing. She’d always joked about their music being world-changing, but this… this was a whole new level of existential dread.
"Hold up, Jamma," Ericka said, her voice trembling but firm. She forced herself to meet Jamma’s multi-faceted gaze. "Are you messing with us? Because this is some serious sci-fi movie stuff. And frankly, it’s a little messed up."
Jamma tilted its head, its galactic eyes swirling. "Nah, fam. No cap. This is legit. The Proxima Centauri planets have a… let's call it a 'cultural imperative.' They require truly exceptional celebratory sonic experiences. Your reputation precedes you. If you fail to deliver the ultimate vibe, Earth is deemed… surplus to requirements. An unfortunate, but necessary, cosmic tidiness."
"Unfortunate? Necessary?" Bebe’s voice was tight with disbelief. "Dude, that’s messed up! We're talking about billions of lives! Our lives!"
"I hear you," Jamma said, its tone softening. "It's a lot of pressure. But hey, you guys are E-Pop and Beebz. You’ve rocked every club, every festival, every penthouse party from Tokyo to Timbuktu. You’ve made the impossible happen with your decks. This is just… a bigger stage. A much, much bigger stage."
Ericka swallowed hard. She looked at Bebe, saw the fear mirrored in her best friend’s eyes, but also a flicker of something else. Determination. They’d faced down demanding club owners, technical meltdowns, and heckling crowds. They’d always found a way to turn it around, to make the music work, to ignite the energy.
"So, what are we talking about here?" Ericka asked, trying to channel her inner E-Pop confidence. "Eight planets. Eight parties. What kind of equipment are we looking at? Is it gonna be, like, alien turntables? Do I gotta learn how to scratch with my feet?"
Jamma let out a synthesized chuckle. "Chill, E-Pop. We got you covered. All the gear you need, and then some. We've got sonic synthesizers that can bend space-time, rhythm generators that pulse with the heartbeat of a dying star, bass boosters that can shake the foundations of a nebula. Everything will be fully integrated with your existing sound libraries. You’ll have access to every sound imaginable, and then some. Think of it as an upgrade. A cosmic upgrade."
Bebe let out a shaky breath. "So… if we do this, Earth is safe?"
"Totally safe," Jamma confirmed. "And you two? You'll be legends. Not just on Earth, but across the entire galaxy. E-Pop and Beebz: the DJs who saved the universe. It’s a pretty dope legacy, wouldn’t you say?"
Ericka looked around the opulent chamber, at the shimmering walls and the pulsing lights. She looked at Bebe, her partner, her sister in beats. The fear was still there, a cold knot in her gut, but it was being slowly, steadily, overtaken by a surge of adrenaline. This was insane. This was terrifying. But it was also… the ultimate challenge. The chance to prove that their music, their passion, their friendship, was truly boundless.
"Alright, Jamma," Ericka said, a slow smile spreading across her face. "You said we have access to every sound imaginable? And then some?"
"That's the word," Jamma replied, beaming.
"Good," Ericka said, her eyes sparkling with a renewed fire. She nudged Bebe. "Because I've been kinda wanting to experiment with some interdimensional bass drops. And you, Beebz, I think it's time we unveiled the 'Cosmic Collapse' remix."
Bebe met her gaze, a hint of her usual playful smirk returning. "You think so? I was saving that for a really, really big gig."
"Honey," Ericka said, clapping her best friend on the shoulder, "I don't think it gets much bigger than this."
Jamma watched them, its galactic eyes reflecting the growing anticipation. "Alright, you two. Let's get this party started. The universe is waiting."
