Chapter 5
A Message from Beyond
While investigating an anomaly, Sarah finds a cryptic message, seemingly left for her. It speaks of a purpose, a design behind the time stop, and hints at a complex mechanism for its reversal, suggesting it wasn't entirely random.
The air, thick and heavy as un-brewed tea, pressed against Sarah’s lungs. It had been days, or perhaps weeks—a meaningless distinction when the sun remained perpetually at its zenith, casting long, unmoving shadows across the frozen cityscape. Each breath was a conscious effort, a small rebellion against the universal inertia. She moved through the hushed streets like a ghost, her footsteps the only sound in a world that had forgotten how to echo. The frozen figures were a constant, unsettling spectacle: a child mid-leap, a bird suspended in an impossible aerial ballet, a couple locked in a kiss that would never deepen. Its edges shimmered with a light that didn’t seem to originate from any discernible source, a spectrum of colors that danced just beyond the threshold of human vision. Marcus, ever the pragmatist, had immediately dismissed it as a trick of the light, a hallucination born of their prolonged exposure to the stillness. Lena, however, had felt a tremor of something, a faint hum that resonated deep within her bones.
“It feels… alive,” Lena had whispered, her voice barely disturbing the silence.
