The sterile hum of the Time Crime Division’s central hub was usually a comforting sound to Kaito, a testament to the order and precision his unit brought to the chaos of history. Tonight, however, it grated on his nerves, a discordant thrum that echoed the frantic rhythm of his own heart. He stood before the holographic display, the shimmering projections of stolen artifacts and breached data streams blurring into an indistinguishable mess. Across from him, Anya’s expression was a mask of professional concern, but Kaito saw the flicker of something else in her sharp eyes – suspicion, perhaps even fear.

“Kaito,” Anya began, her voice carefully modulated, “we’ve been over this. The anomalies in the ‘Great Library Heist’ echo are statistically insignificant. A glitch in the visual rendering, nothing more.”

Kaito gripped the edge of the console, his knuckles white. “Insignificant? Anya, that figure… it was him again. Just like in the Renaissance art thefts, just like the Babylonian jewel heist. Always there, always just out of frame, always looking… like me.” He gestured wildly at the projection, a fleeting, distorted image of a cloaked figure dissolving into static. “And this time, there was something else. A partial DNA trace. Human. Male. And the preliminary match… it’s a ninety-seven percent certainty.”
