He stared at the holo-display, the shimmering images of the 21st-century data breach replaying themselves, each flicker a stab of dread. The anomaly was there, as always. A figure, cloaked in shadow, moving with a familiarity that chilled him to the bone. And then, the undeniable proof, projected in stark, irrefutable detail: a partial fingerprint, lifted from a dislodged server panel, matching his own.
“Impossible,” he breathed, the word rasping in his dry throat. He’d been *here*, in the temporal observation chamber, a thousand years removed from the event. Yet, his print. His DNA. Witness accounts, fragmented and unreliable as they were, spoke of a man with his build, his gait, his… his face. A face he saw every morning in the polished chrome of his apartment, a face that was beginning to feel like a mask.
Anya’s voice, usually a calm anchor in the storm of their investigations, was sharp with concern. “Kaito, what is it? You’ve been staring at that loop for hours.”
