The wind, a constant, mournful rasp across the cracked earth, whipped John’s tattered cloak about him. Beside him, Mara, her face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere physical exhaustion, scanned the desolate horizon. Behind them, a string of shuffling figures, the remnants of what had once been a thriving community, trudged forward. Their footsteps were a soft, desperate percussion against the silence, each one a testament to the impossible journey they had undertaken.
It had been Elias’s decision, a brutal, necessary amputation of their past. The enclave, their fragile haven, was no more. The ‘waken’, as they had come to call them, had finally breached their defenses, their guttural cries echoing through the ruins that had once been their home. The choice had been stark: fight and likely perish, or flee and carry the embers of their existence into the unknown. Elias, his voice a raw rasp, had made the call. “We go. Now. And we don’t look back.”
John felt the weight of that decision settle in his gut, a cold, heavy stone. He had argued, his voice, surprisingly, steady amidst the chaos. “We can’t just abandon everything. Our supplies, our defenses…”
