The wind, a constant, mournful dirge, whipped dust devils across the cracked earth. John adjusted the worn leather strap of his salvaged rifle, its familiar weight a small comfort in the vast, indifferent expanse. The settlement, a cluster of ramshackle structures clinging to the lee of a ruined highway overpass, was more a testament to desperation than an actual haven. Yet, it was home. Or, as close to home as John had found in this broken world.
He scanned the horizon, a ritual born of necessity and ingrained fear. The sun, a pale, washed-out disc in the perpetually hazy sky, offered little warmth, but it marked the passage of time, a precious commodity. Days bled into weeks, weeks into months, and with each passing cycle, John felt the last vestiges of his forgotten past receding further, replaced by the stark, immediate reality of survival. He was no longer the man who had woken with a blank slate; he was a man forged in the crucible of this dead world, his ambition now honed to a single, sharp point: protect.
Elias, his face a roadmap of weary lines, emerged from the shadows of the overpass. He moved with a slow, deliberate gait, every step a concession to his aging bones. “Anything, John?” his voice rasped, dry as the dust that coated everything.
