John watched as the last embers of their meager campfire died, the embers mirroring the fading hope that had once burned within him. The silence that descended was not the empty quiet of the desolation he had first awakened to, but a heavy, watchful hush. It was the sound of people holding their breath, waiting. Waiting for him.
He turned to face them, the flickering torchlight casting long, dancing shadows across their gaunt faces. These were the remnants of the enclave, the survivors he had found huddled in the husk of a forgotten town. They were a tapestry woven from fear and resilience, their eyes holding the ghosts of a world that was no more. He saw in them the same desperate spark that had ignited within him when he first stumbled upon their existence, a spark that had refused to be extinguished by the endless expanse of the dead world.
“The sanctuary is a story,” he said, his voice rough but steady, carrying across the hushed gathering. He met their gazes, one by one, letting the weight of his words settle. “A beautiful lie that led too many to their graves. We searched for it, and we found nothing but more emptiness.”
