The Crucible of Choice
Disaster strikes. An attack or a collapse? John is thrust into leadership, the weight of their survival on his shoulders. A brutal choice must be made.
The sky, a bruised and angry purple, offered no solace. It pressed down on the meager cluster of shelters, a suffocating blanket of despair. John, his face etched with a weariness that went beyond physical exhaustion, watched the dust devils dance across the cracked earth. The tremors had started subtly, a low thrumming beneath his feet, easily dismissed as another quirk of this broken world. But then the ground had begun to heave, not with the violent, earth-shattering roars of before, but with a deeper, more insidious groan.
The shelters, cobbled together from salvaged metal and sun-bleached hides, groaned in protest. A sickening crack echoed from the western edge, followed by a cascade of debris. Panic, a familiar, unwelcome guest, began to stir in the eyes of the enclave’s inhabitants. Old Man Hemlock, his face a roadmap of wrinkles, clutched his gnarled walking stick, his knuckles white. Elara, her usual pragmatic demeanor replaced by a flicker of fear, was already directing the younger ones, her voice strained but steady.
“To the higher ground! Now!” she shouted, her gaze sweeping across the terrified faces. “Don’t wait for the collapse!”
