The air in the enclave tasted of desperation, a stale blend of woodsmoke, unwashed bodies, and the metallic tang of fear. John had known hunger, had known isolation, had even known the gnawing dread of the Waken’s shadow. But this was a different kind of gnawing, a slow erosion of spirit that was more insidious than any physical threat. The sanctuary, the whispered promise that had fueled his arduous journey, had dissolved like mist under a brutal sun. It was a story, a beautiful, terrible lie that had lured so many into the desolate embrace of the unknown.
He sat by the dying embers of the communal fire, the rough spun blanket doing little to ward off the chill that seeped not just from the night air, but from the very hearts of the people huddled around him. Maria, her face etched with lines that spoke of too many lost dawns, stirred a pot of thin gruel. Her movements were mechanical, devoid of the flicker of warmth that had once characterized her. Beside her, young Finn, usually a whirlwind of restless energy, sat slumped, his gaze fixed on nothing, his small shoulders bowed. Even Silas, the enclave’s grizzled elder, whose pronouncements had once carried the weight of immutable truth, now spoke in hushed, uncertain tones, his eyes darting to the barricades as if expecting an attack from within.
“It’s no use, John,” Maria said, her voice barely a whisper, as if the very act of speaking too loudly might awaken some unseen predator. “We’ve rationed until there’s nothing left to ration. The wells are running low. And the Waken… they’re bolder each night.”
