The air tasted of dust and something acrid, a metallic tang that clung to the back of John’s throat. He’d stumbled upon it a few days prior, a faint plume against the bruised twilight sky, a whisper of smoke in a world that had long forgotten the comfort of fire. Now, the source of that whisper loomed before him, a scar of habitation carved into the desolate earth. It wasn’t a city, not even a town. It was an enclave, a collection of rough-hewn structures huddled together like frightened animals, shielded by a makeshift palisade of scavenged metal and petrified wood.

He approached with the caution of a predator, his senses on high alert. Every rustle of dead leaves, every sigh of the wind through skeletal trees, could be a prelude to danger. The silence here was different from the dead silence of the open wastes; it was a watchful silence, pregnant with unseen eyes. He could feel them, the weight of their scrutiny, even before he saw the first face.

A figure emerged from the shadows of the gate, a woman with eyes like chips of obsidian and a face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue. Her hand rested on the hilt of a crudely fashioned spear, its tip glinting dully in the sparse light. She didn’t speak, didn’t move, just watched him with an unnerving stillness. John stopped, his hands held open, palms outward, a universal gesture of non-aggression.
