Chapter 5

Pores and Paradoxes

The team investigates the fluctuating pressure anomaly, experimenting with surface chemistry adjustments and involving Kenji’s technical team. Lena identifies a correlation with organic contaminants, suggesting a new cleaning protocol. Aris debates altering the membrane chemistry further, while Kenji pushes for rapid validation. The chapter ends with a new cleaning cycle being tested and anticipation building over its outcome.

Lena’s hands hovered above the latest printout. Pressure surges and dips—abnormal, unpredictable, yet persistent—were marked in sharp red on her graphs. She traced the errant lines, trying to conjure order from the noise. Kenji’s technical team had arrived the previous morning, taking notes in silent pairs, each glance heavy with expectation.

Aris called a quick meeting around the main monitor. "We need an actionable hypothesis," he announced, voice clipped with fatigue. Lena presented her findings first. "The timing of these anomalies matches hours when trace organic contaminants appear in the feed," she said, tapping the table. Under high magnification, she’d noticed faint residues occasionally gathering near the cross-linked junctions. "It could be that the new cross-linkers are binding more than we intended—a double-edged sword."

Kenji watched them both, expression unreadable. "If industrial partners see instability in a routine test, we lose credibility. What's the fallback?"
