Chapter 9
The Pact of Shadows
Valerius consolidates his power among opportunistic factions, promising them a share of the kingdom's rediscovered might. He delves deeper into forbidden magic, seeking to control the ruins' dark heart.
The air in Valerius’s temporary chambers, carved from the rough-hewn stone of a forgotten guardhouse, hummed with a palpable tension. It wasn't the nervous energy of anticipation, but the coiled stillness of a predator observing its prey. Outside, the wind howled a mournful dirge through the skeletal remains of Eldoria, a sound that usually stirred a pang of sorrow in Valerius’s chest. Tonight, however, it was a symphony, a prelude to the grand performance he was orchestrating.

“The whispers grow louder, Lord Valerius,” a voice rasped from the shadows near the entrance. It belonged to Roric, a man whose face was a roadmap of scars and whose loyalty was as malleable as river clay. He was a mercenary captain, his band a motley collection of hardened souls who cared little for lineage or legacy, only for coin and the promise of power.
