The wind carried whispers, not of the usual rustling leaves or distant birdsong, but of something far more chilling. It was a murmur that snaked through the narrow alleys of the villages, slithered over the desolate plains, and coiled itself around the hearts of the people. The name Malakor. Spoken only in hushed tones, it was a name that tasted of ice and decay, a name that brought with it a palpable dread.

Kaelen, even in the relative safety of Lyra’s secluded cottage, felt the shift. It was a subtle darkening of the air, a prickling sensation on his skin that had nothing to do with the approaching autumn chill. He’d noticed it first in the marketplace, the way people’s eyes darted nervously towards the horizon, the way conversations died abruptly when a shadow fell too long. Then came the dreams, more vivid now, the burning crown no longer a distant inferno but a suffocating blaze licking at his very soul. The whispering voice, once a comforting guide, now seemed tinged with a desperate urgency.

“He grows stronger,” Lyra murmured one evening, her gaze fixed on the flickering hearth fire. Her fingers, usually steady, traced the worn emblem on her locket. The familiar silver glint seemed to hold a shadow of its own. “The despair, the fear… it is his sustenance.”
