The air in the secluded grove was thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient pine, a fragrance that always settled Kaelen’s restless spirit. Lyra had chosen this place carefully, a pocket of wildness tucked away from the watchful eyes of the town, where the only witnesses were the stoic trees and the chattering of unseen creatures. Sunlight dappled through the canopy, painting shifting patterns on the moss-covered stones that littered the ground. It was here, amidst the quiet hum of nature, that Lyra had promised to begin Kaelen’s true education.

“Focus, Kaelen,” Lyra’s voice, usually a gentle melody, held a firm edge. She stood a few paces away, her back straight, her gaze steady. “The power is not a wild beast to be tamed, but a river to be guided. Feel its flow within you.”

Kaelen squeezed his eyes shut, trying to push away the familiar ache of frustration. He’d spent weeks with Lyra, weeks of cryptic lessons and strange exercises, and still, the power she spoke of remained elusive, a tantalizing whisper just beyond his grasp. He could feel *something*, a thrumming beneath his skin, a warmth that sometimes flared into an uncomfortable heat, but he couldn't command it. He couldn’t make it do anything.
