Chapter 14
Valerius's Gambit
Lord Valerius makes his move, attempting to seize control of the heart of the ruins. He unleashes dark forces, believing he is on the verge of ultimate victory over Kaelen.
The air in the heart of the ruins thrummed with a palpable tension, a stark contrast to the hushed reverence Kaelen had felt just moments before. Lord Valerius, his face a mask of grim determination, stood before a colossal obsidian altar, its surface etched with ancient, glowing runes. These were the very symbols Kaelen had studied under Lyra’s tutelage, the language of a forgotten power, now twisted and leering under Valerius’s dark intent.
“You are too late, Kaelen,” Valerius’s voice, usually so smooth and reassuring, now echoed with a chilling resonance, amplified by the cavernous space. He gestured with a sweep of his hand, and spectral figures, their forms shimmering like heat haze, began to coalesce from the shadows clinging to the cavern walls. They were wraiths, their eyes burning with a cold, hungry light, their ethereal weapons glinting ominously. “The true power of this place will soon be mine.”
Kaelen’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of disbelief and dawning horror. Lyra stood beside him, her hand resting on the hilt of her own ancient blade, her knuckles white. Her normally serene expression was now etched with a deep sorrow, a pain that mirrored the betrayal Kaelen felt twisting in his gut.
