Lyra traced the intricate, worn pattern on the silver locket nestled in her palm. The cool metal was a familiar weight, a constant reminder of the oath she had sworn, and the vow she had broken. Outside the small, flickering lamplight of their temporary camp, the night was alive with the rustling of unseen creatures and the distant howl of a lone wolf, a sound that always sent a shiver down Kaelen’s spine, though he never admitted it. Each woman had carried the weight of Eldoria’s fall, each had carried the hope that one day, the bloodline would rise again. Lyra’s mother had died in the chaos, her last breath a whispered plea for Lyra to protect the last ember of hope. And Lyra had tried. Oh, how she had tried.
